How to choose the right urn

In the past, the choices for cremation urns are quite limited.  But this is no longer the case these days as cremation is fast becoming a popular option for final disposition.

Cremation urns come in different styles, sizes and shapes, from the traditional urns suited for display to more eco-friendly options.  As there are so many options available in the market these days, selecting the best one can be a daunting task, unless you know what you are looking for.  Here are a couple of tips on how to look for the best cremation urn for a deceased loved one

  • Decide on what you want to do with the ashes first.  This will help you determine the design, material and size of the run you want to purchase.  If you are considering on burying the ashes, an urn made of biodegradable materials is your best option.  On the other hand, if you prefer to display the urn in your home or in a mausoleum niche with a glass front, an elegant, personalized urn would be a perfect choice.
  • Consider the personality of the deceased if you are planning on customizing the cremation urn.  For instance, if the deceased loved one is a nature lover, go for biodegradable urns made up of bamboo, paper-clay and other eco-friendly materials.  Engraving, too, is another way to personalize a cremation urn.  You can have the deceased person’s favorite quote or verse engraved or carved on the urn.
  • Size matters, especially when you are planning on interring the ashes in a columbarium or mausoleum niche.  That is why it is important to check with the authorities on the size of urns allowed in the niches.  If you are also planning on scattering or dividing the ashes, you won’t need a large urn.  You can purchase a small, keepsake urn, or consider a cremation jewelry to store the remaining ash.
  • If you are planning on carrying the ashes with you on a flight, choose an urn which will likely not trigger the alarm.  Transparent glass urns are a good choice as they are also elegant and won’t be able to set off any alarms when you go through airport security.
