Modern cremation options: Urns, niches and memorial walls

In Canada, the number of individuals choosing cremation over traditional burial has increased from approximately five per cent in the 1970s to almost 60 per cent in 2012.

One of the key questions facing anyone considering cremation is:

How would I like my ashes or those of my loved ones preserved forever with dignity and respect?

As cremation becomes more popular and acceptable throughout society, St. John’s Dixie Cemetery and Crematorium is pleased to offer a variety of options in terms of how cremated remains will be preserved, including urns, niches and memorial walls. Read More

Most people are familiar with the concept of the cremation urn. Since ancient times, the urn has been the traditional repository for cremated ashes. Today, cremation urn designs range from simple and classic to elaborate and highly personal, to suit every taste.

A recent issue of Maclean’s magazine looked at the creative urns now being designed to contain the cremated remains of loved ones. Some designs reflected a hobby or profession, such as golf or teaching. Others look like modern sculptures and are crafted from wood, glass, marble, ceramics and metal by trained artisans.

Some artists even create jewelry containing cremated ashes, so that numerous individuals can each treasure a keepsake of their late relative or friend.

We aim to accommodate the unique wishes of each individual and family. Don’t hesitate to ask about the many choices available in terms of cremation urns and other repositories.

As well, St. John’s Dixie provides stunning niches and memorial walls in which to place a loved one’s cremated remains for all time.

These beautiful areas are located both indoors (recessed in our visitation center wall) and outdoors (in immaculately tended columbaria throughout the cemetery grounds.)

Cremated ashes are placed within these attractive niches and memorial walls, to provide visitors with a permanent, peaceful location at which to place flowers, visit and pay their respects.

The columbaria’s contemplative garden atmosphere is lovingly maintained at all times.

Whether you choose an urn, a niche or memorial wall, St. John’s Dixie works together with everyone involved to create a lasting memorial that reflects personal values and beliefs, and the dignity of every human being.
